We are honored to host WWII veteran Lt. Col. Robert Friend, one of only 19 surviving Tuskegee Airmen. These pioneers were the first African American pilots to serve in the US armed forces. Their units served with distinction flying bomber escort in the European Theater, going head-to-head with Germany's best pilots. The Tuskegee Airman were named for the airfield in Tuskegee, Alabama where they trained.
