Join abandoned mine explorer Eric Cole on a hike to one of the most picturesque mine sites in the San Gabriel Mountains. This gold mine was worked from the late 1800's through most of the last century. The stamp mill buildings are still standing. The 3 1/2 mile hike (round trip) is fairly level, is of moderate difficulty, and passes through some spectacular scenery. The mine entrances are blocked, but some hikers do squeeze through and enter the mine. Mines are dangerous and contain hazards, and entering the mine is not part of our tour. If you decide that you want to leave our group and enter the mine, you would need a flashlight, jacket and shoes that can get wet.
For this hike you will need hiking shoes, a hat, and plenty of water.
The trailhead is located along the Angeles Crest Highway at Vincent Gap, nearly to Wrightwood. Because of that we will meet at the (former) Sport Chalet parking lot and car pool. The now closed Sport Chalet is located at 2 Sport Chalet Drive, near the intersection of Foothill and Angeles Crest in La Canada.
