While many of us don't think of the Crescenta Valley or Glendale as hotbeds of Modern architecture, it's amazing how many fine examples we actually have! To illustrate this point, Jay Platt, Glendale's Historic Preservation Planner, will give a presentation about our terrific, though often overlooked, collection of Modernist buildings. Some of these are tucked away in residential neighborhoods that we might never drive through and others are hiding in plain view. Come prepared to learn how to "Expect the Unexpected"!
The Lutheran Church in the Foothills, built in 1965, features an iconic stylized sculpture right on Foothill Blvd. in La Canada.
The Pinecrest area at the top of La Crescenta has many great examples of Mid-Century Modern architecture in the homes built by local developer/designer Webster Wiley. His designs can often be identified by the atrium entryways.
Regular meetings are held the third Monday of each month at 7:00 PM at the the Center for Spiritual Living, formerly known as the La Crescenta Church of Religious Science located at the intersection of Dunsmore and Santa Carlotta.
