Twelve Oaks Lodge was given to the community in 1935 by James and Effie Fifield to "bring sunshine into the hearts and lives of those less fortunate". It was operated as a non-profit retirement home for seniors until 2013, when it was dramatically closed and sold in a corporate takeover. The community rose up against this injustice and regained the property in a court battle. It has now reopened as a senior home. Its 5 acres of oak-covered land is a historic piece of La Crescenta history, and a testament to the power of community in the Crescenta Valley.
