Camp Max Straus was created in 1938 on 112 wooded acres on the CV side of the Verdugo Mountains. Owned and operated by Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles, it provides summer camp and year-round recreational opportunities for underprivileged kids 7-12 years of age. This amazingly beautiful campus is tucked back in a residential neighborhood, on the edge of what was once Onandarka Ranch, and is another of those community gems that few locals even know exists. There will be walking involved in this tour, and much of it on uneven ground, as well as some up and down hill walking, mostly on dirt surfaces.
Camp Max Strauss directions: travel south on La Crescenta Ave. past Honolulu, and turn right on Shirleyjean (directly across from La Crescenta Nursery). Address: 1041 Shirleyjean St.
