Clifton's Cafeteria opened in downtown LA in 1931 with a whimsical design theme that was immediately successful. The cafeteria's decor playfully mixed themes such as the deep forest or the South Seas islands into a Disneyland-like eating experience. Its founder Clifford Clinton was a political crusader, cleaning up corruption in city politics. This is the history of the most popular restaurant in LA, and its dynamic and egalitarian owner.

Our speaker, Edmond J. Clinton III is the eldest grandson of Clifford Clinton, and lives in La Canada.
