The Mount Lowe Railway: Then and Now

Monday, August 18th 7:00pm
La Crescenta Center for Spiritual Living
At the intersection of Dunsmore and Santa Carlotta

The Mt. Lowe Railway, an electrified trolley line that took visitors from Altadena to high in the San Gabriel Mountains was conceived by Professor Thaddeus Lowe in the late 1800's. It was considered one of the engineering wonders of the world. After riding millions of tourists in what was considered a "must see" by visitors to Southern California, it was finally overcome by the forces of nature and economics and closed in the '30s. Today, its extensive ruins are a popular destination for hikers and a source of fascination for rail-fans and historians.

Our presenter, author and collector Michael Patris is considered the leading expert on this amazing railroad that once existed right in our backyard. He’ll present a program designed to show you both the past and the present of this interesting highlight in California history.

Regular meetings are held the third Monday of each month at 7:00 PM at the the Center for Spiritual Living, formerly known as the La Crescenta Church of Religious Science located at the intersection of Dunsmore and Santa Carlotta.
